It was this time of year in 2000 when Italian photographer Paolo Destefanis set out with my manuscript in hand to shoot images for Veneto: Authentic Recipes From Venice and the Italian Northeast, a title I wrote for Chronicle Books. I had gone with him earlier in the year to capture the magic of the Venice and its waterways in springtime and to explore locations in some of the mainland provinces. But I missed the second trip the following fall, and had to satisfy myself with being there vicariously through the vivid photographs he took. Veneto bookWhile I love the fieldwork, research, and recipe testing that is the writer’s task when producing a cookbook, I have always been drawn just as much to the design and illustration of its pages. Housebound after multiple surgeries and subsequent therapies, it was a melancholy autumn, lost to me forever, but Paolo’s painterly images were a consolation. Looking at them again today, it occurred to me that my readers have been deprived of seeing many of them, as the budget for the book allowed for only some twenty-five.

Here, with Paolo’s permission, is a gallery of photographs, both unpublished and published, that evoke the spirit, the flavors, and the experience of Venice and its beautiful region at this glorious time of year.

  1. Julia – what absolutely beautiful memories of a lost fall. It is a pity you were unable to make the return trip, but Paolo, with his unerring eye was able to capture the spirit the Veneto and bring added life to your manuscript. What a blessing.

Aren’t the pumpkins of Italy things of wonder? One year I grew several varieties here in Southern California, and I was thrilled as I watched the pumpkins grow bigger each day. These were pumpkins, as you well know, far removed from our American ones. There were bumpy warty ones, brownish-orange ones streaked with gray, beautiful blue ones, all with flesh heavily saturated with color. These were things of beauty with keeping qualities second to none.

Thank you for sharing the photos. They are a joy to look at.

    • Your generous messages always warm my heart, Adri. I know that you love Italy and its beauty and deliciousness with all your heart, with all its flaws, just as I do. Yes, the pumpkins are are things of wonder; I love them in all their wartiness. They look so different from ours, and they taste very different, too. Things of beauty, as you say. It has always amazed me how much the Venetians–all of Veneto–love them! It takes the Italians to create such fantastic dishes with the flesh of a squash–the risottos, the fresh stuffed pasta, the delicious priimi of all kinds; the sweet pumpkin desserts–cakes and puddings, for example.

Un forte abbraccio, amica mia. xoxo

  2. Fond memories / Cari Ricordi 🙂 Grazie Julia!
